Ways to Earn Continuing Education Credits

Meetings and Courses

At least 10 out of 45 hours of CE must be from “attendance” at meetings in CORE topics

  • 1:1 Credit for attendance at AACO, AOC®, FOREA, AAPOS, and NANOS
  • 1:1 Noncore credit for IJCAHPO intermediate and advanced courses; no credits for basic level courses.
  • 1:1 Credit will be given for attendance at foreign meetings if sponsored/approved by recognized orthoptic or ophthalmology organizations (examples: IOC, COC, TCOS, CLADE, PAAO, ISA, ESA, WSPOS, IPOSC).

The AOC® grants Core Continuing Education credits for courses which align with the advanced education and training of orthoptists.

Courses designed for technicians and technologists typically do not offer the depth of knowledge required for orthoptic practice, however, noncore credits will be given for intermediate and advanced level IJCAHPO courses.

*Local or regional ophthalmologist sponsored meetings with AMA credits are eligible for 1:1 credits with the following requirements:  Attendees must list courses, speakers and proof of attendance. Core topics must be taught by orthoptists, physicians or PhDs.

Presentations, Publications, & Posters

3:1 credit for creating and presenting an instruction course on AOC® Core topics for orthoptists and/or orthoptic students (1hour course = 3 credits)

Credits for an instruction course can be used once per renewal cycle

Maximum of 12 credits per renewal cycle for instruction courses

Credits are not awarded to program directors and instructors for teaching within their own program

  • 10 credits for publication of a paper in an refereed journal
  • 5 credits for a talk/presentation at AOC® approved meetings (core or non-core topic)
  • 5 credits to author or as presenter of AOC® approved instructional video
  • 5 credits per author for a poster at an AOC® recognized meeting

Note: If a presentation or poster follows the publication it may earn 2, not 5 credits. In combination, the same material may earn 12 hours of CE. If the publication follows the presentation or poster the same work will receive 7 not 10 credits
